Dolphin Tours in New Zealand

It may not be that well known that New Zealand is in fact one of the best countries in the world to view dolphins out in the wild. Dolphin tours are common at many locations around New Zealand but of course there are places in particular that experience higher numbers of these wonderful marine creatures.

New Zealand also boasts a number of dolphin species so if you're looking for a great dolphin experience, you're in the right place.

So, where is the best place to go? Read one to find out where different dolphin species can be seen and where you can actually get in the water and swim with these beautiful mammals; and once you know where you want to go, we can help you book the perfect dolphin tour experience.

South Island

Kaikōura, located in the South Island has become one of the top tourist destinations for its abundance of rare marine life. In Kaikōura there are operators that give you the opportunity to swim with dusky dolphins. This species of dolphin are found swimming in Kaikōura all year round. They are well known for their acrobatic ability, so to be swimming around while they perform is wonderfully entertaining. While you are here you may also see seals, whales, albatross and more. Wildlife-lovers will also enjoy Kaikoura for its seal, whale and albatross sightings too! Book your dolphin swim with Dolphin Encounter on Klook. Find out more about Kaikoura in The Complete Guide to Kaikoura.

Akaroa is known for one of New Zealand's popular locations where dolphins love to swim as the area is full of little inlets and bays that are full of food. Here you'll have the opportunity to swim with the world’s smallest dolphins, Hector’s dolphins. If you're looking for a close encounter then here is the place. Hector’s dolphins are super friendly so are bound to come say hello - and you're almost guaranteed to see them. An unforgettable encounter like this is a must if you are in the area. The waters in this region are a vibrant aqua blue which make the experience that much more enjoyable. You may also spot penguins, seals, and whales in this region.

Curio Bay and Porpoise Bay are also excellent spots to see and swim with Hector’s dolphins. In summer, pods of up to 30 Hector’s dolphins feed in Porpoise Bay almost daily, and they love to play with surfers and swimmers in the water performing acrobatic stunts.

Marlborough Sounds

If you're looking to see numerous dolphin species then a dolphin tour in the Marlborough Sounds is a great option - bottlenose dolphins, dusky dolphins, occasionally Hector’s dolphins and even orcas can be seen this this region. Not only does this area boast plenty of dolphin species but the scenery is absolutely stunning as well. Dolphin viewing and swimming with dolphins are both on offer in this region by several operators. For those less keen on swimming but still want to be up close there are also some operators with kayaking options.

Bay of Plenty

The Bay of Plenty is aptly named, because there really is plenty to see here. This area is home to many common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins. There is also plenty of other marine wildlife that you may see including humpback whales, seals, and even turtles. Dolphin tours with the option to swim are available and if there's also the more fun opportunity to be pulled along on the back of a boat which is more intruiging for the dolphins that can swim to keep up.

The Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a popular choice, mainly due to the subtropical climate and warmer water during the summer months. The countless little bays and picturesque island make it the ideal place for all sorts of water related activities. Dolphins are common visitors to the bay however due to regulations it may not be possible to swim with them due to declining numbers of bottlenose dolphins. There are still plenty of pods swimming around the area so you're likely to see them but just can't get in the water with them.
