FAQs
Will my trip be cancelled if it’s bad weather?
If the captain decides that due to the weather, conditions aboard won’t be safe, your trip may need to be rescheduled. Check these details at the time you make your booking.
Am I guaranteed to catch a fish?
This depends on the business and location you choose for your fishing charter. Usually, there is no guarantee that you will catch a fish. As well as technique and knowledge, fishing requires a bit of luck, and when you’re dealing with nature, there are no guarantees. That said, your captain will do their best to take you to an area where the fish are biting, giving you the best chance of landing a catch. Even if you don’t catch a fish, you can still have an unforgettable trip in one of the most scenic locations in the world.
Can I take my catch home with me?
Fish and shellfish need to be a certain size before you can take them. The government sets these size limits to allow species to breed at least once before they are taken from the sea. There is also a daily catch limit for how much fish or shellfish you can take in a day - and this includes any you consume during your trip. Your captain will be able to advise you on what you can take home with you.
Do I need a license?
You don’t need a license to fish in the sea around New Zealand, but you do need a license for freshwater fishing i.e. in lakes and rivers. You can find out more about the rules here: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/fishing-aquaculture/recreational-fishing/
What if I haven’t fished before?
Generally speaking, a fishing charter is suitable for enthusiasts of all levels of experience. If you’re a complete novice, let the crew know and they’ll be able to cover the basics with you so that you can still get plenty out of the day - and you may even land your first catch!
Where is the best place for fishing in New Zealand?
With more than 15,000 kilometers of coastline, New Zealand boasts some fantastic sea fishing regions, so you can really take your pick - from the Bay of Islands, Doubtless Bay, the Bay of Plenty and Southland to name just a few excellent spots.
Are your boats wheelchair-accessible?
Some of our boats have disabled access. Look out for ‘disabled access’ on the boat listing or ask our expert team when making your booking.
What should I bring with me and wear?
Just like any guided tour, take any essentials with you such as medication, your wallet and so on. Pack these items in a waterproof bag, or ask the crew if there is a place on board you can store them. It’s also a good idea to bring a towel, as well as vacuum-seal bags if you want to take your catch home with you.
You’ll also want to pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a spare change of clothing in case you get wet! We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, and boat shoes make a good choice of footwear.
